My Song Playlist for Creating Art

It’s time for a good, old fashioned . . . song playlist. For me, creating art and listening to music go together like peanut butter and jelly. Mac and cheese. Coffee and creamer.

You get the idea.

Only, my taste in music is a little offbeat.

Okay, a lot offbeat.

In order to focus on doing my mixed media art, I need my music to be funky, full of beats, have a great hook and melody, and be kind of repetitive. It’s just what gets me in the zone.

I Love to Look For New, Different Music!

I have three different “go to’s” when I’m jamming out. I’ll either listen to music I’ve downloaded on iTunes, type a song into YouTube and let it come up with my playlists based on what I listen to, or play one of my Pandora channels. Pandora often alerts me to new music that I either download or go to YouTube to listen to.

Music Inspires My Art Sometimes

You know when you hear a song and decide you love it, and then you just can’t get rid of it? Just like the gum commercial song in the movie Inside Out, you find your brain serving it up to you on repeat.

When I have songs that won’t leave me alone, I sometimes turn them into paintings. Sometimes it’s a line in the song that speaks to me, and sometimes it’s the idea of the song itself.

For example, this painting was inspired by the song “Clubbed to Death” by Rob Dougan:

You can use songs to inspire your art, too. Use a snippet of the lyrics, make some imagery based on the song’s words, or even just do a painting about how the song makes you feel.

I Made You a YouTube Song Playlist, Too!

Here is a list of songs I can listen to repeatedly that get me painting (and often singing along, too). Although, I’ll spare you that ear splitting experience. You’re welcome. You can listen to the original amazing songs instead. I’ve listed the song title and artist, and it’s linked to a YouTube video so you can hear it. At the end of the list, I included the link to a YouTube playlist with all the songs on it.

“Painting Greys” by Emmit Fenn

“Falling” by Opia

“Nevermind” by Dennis Lloyd

“Breathe” by Embrz

“Paris” by Else

“Bellyache” by Billie Eilish

“Sail” by AWOLNATION

“You’re Mine,” by Raving George

“Prayer in C” by Lilly Wood & The Prick (Robin Schulz Remix)

“Tuesday” by Burak Yeter

“Gooey” by Glass Animals

“Be Mine” by Ofenbach

“I Found” by Amber Run

“Wish I Knew You” by The Revivalists

And, I saved the best (in my opinion) for last! This is one of my all time favorite songs, ever.

“Finally Moving,” by Pretty Lights

I Hope You Enjoyed the Songs!

I tried to make it easy to listen to by linking the YouTube videos right in this post, but if that’s for some reason not working, or you would just prefer to access the whole playlist, here is a link to the playlist on my YouTube channel: Jaime’s Music Playlist for Creating Art

I hope you enjoy listening to these songs and that they inspire you to create as much as they’ve inspired me! I’d love to hear your faves, too. Drop a comment with your favorite song to create art to and I’ll go give it a listen.
